How To Register As A Nurse In Ireland?
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) maintains the Register of Nurses and Midwives in Ireland.
Nurses and midwives who want to work in Ireland must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
It is illegal to practise as a nurse or a midwife if you are not on the Register.
If you have successfully completed a nursing or midwife graduate programme in Ireland, you will already have met
the requirements set by the NMBI as nursing and midwifery graduate programmes in Ireland have been NMBI approved.
If you have trained outside of Ireland you must meet these requirements to be eligible to apply for registration with the NMBI
- Hold a valid nursing license/registration, without restrictions, in the country in which you qualified or are currently practicing in.
- Have a minimum of 12 months current Registered Nurse/Midwifery experience within the last 5 years.
- Meet the English Language requirements by either the International English Language Test System (IELTS) or the Occupational English Test (OET). Those who trained through the medium of English in Ireland, UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempt from providing evidence of language competence.
Nurses and Midwives who Qualified Outside Ireland Applying for Registration with NMBI will Need to Complete Two Processes
- Recognition of qualifications – this involves the comparison of your qualifications with the Irish education standards and requirements.
- Registration.
The Application Process
The NMBI Classify their applicants into three groups. Each group is requested to submit different documents and is assessed differently.
Group 1 – Trained as a general nurse or midwifein the European Union (EU) or EuropeanEconomic Area (EEA).
Group 2 – Trained as a general nurse or midwife in the EU or EEA (general system) / trained in the EU or EEA in a division other than general nursing or midwifery
Group 3 – Trained outside the EU or EEA (foreign nurse)
If you are still unsure on which group you belong to the NMBI has a tool that will identify the appropriate group. All you need to do is log into MyNMBI and answer a few questions.
