The registration of nurses and midwives in Ireland is governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Since 2018, all nurses who practiced outside Ireland and midwives wanting to practice in Ireland have had to register with NMBI. The NMBI registration structure for overseas nurses follows a set of simple steps from application, document submission, OET or IELTS, and payment. Who needs to register?
Whether the nurse or midwife is trained in Ireland or trained overseas they are required to register with the NMBI to practice in Ireland. This includes general nurses, psychiatric nurses, intellectual disability nurses, children’s nurses and midwives.
Categories of Registration
Various classifications are kept by the NMBI to correspond to the different branches of nursing and midwifery. Applicants shall apply for a license in the division that corresponds to their qualifications and intended scope of practice.
Application Process
The application process is quite standard but differs slightly for those who practiced within Ireland and those who did it overseas. Generally an applicant for NMBI registration has to go through the following steps.

The Application Process
The NMBI Classify their applicants into three groups. Each group is requested to submit different documents and is assessed differently.
Group 1 – Trained as a general nurse or midwifein the European Union (EU) or EuropeanEconomic Area (EEA).
Group 2 – Trained as a general nurse or midwife in the EU or EEA (general system) / trained in the EU or EEA in a division other than general nursing or midwifery
Group 3 – Trained outside the EU or EEA (foreign nurse)

Checklist for Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Registration
- Passport copy (Colour copy need to be notarized)
- Degree or Diploma certificates (Need to be notarized)
- Transcript colour copy all pages need to be stamped and signed by college principal then need to notarize all pages.
- Syllabus copy – principal need to sign and stamp first and last two pages and then notarize
- Qualification form need to be filled , signed stamped by college principal
- Employment verification form need to be filled by all employer you worked till date
- Good standing certificate from all your nursing councils
- OET Card (colour copy need to be Notarized)
Other documents if needed
- Name affidavit: If there is a name variation between the passport and all educational credentials
- Declaration from hospital if their mail I’d is not official i.e. Gmail, yahoo
- Declaration from employer if mail I’d is not official
- Self declaration : if any gap
- Declaration from notary advocate on his letterhead. (Declare that the specified documents have been seen and checked against originals.)
- Contact Details ( E-Mail ID & Phone Number) of Notary Advocate needed in all notarized documents
